Wild Walker Review

As a teenager, this reviewer enjoyed a zombie movie or two like anyone else, but the fascination for this genre soon wore off at a more mature age. Of course, we still enjoy a good slot game, no matter what the genre might be, and we will not allow our personal preferences to cloud our judgement in any way in this review. Wild Walker is actually very well-made on the surface, as it comes with a dense apocalyptic atmosphere that’s only amplified by the burning, trashed city in the background and the animated zombie wild constantly roaming around on the reels.

The game is played out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 fixed ways to win, and you can place bets between 25p and £125 across both mobile, tablet and pc. There are no jump scares in Wild Walker slot, in case you wondered, but the high volatility might scare off some casual players. We can promise you a long walk through dangerous territory here, before you might get to the bonus round lab you’re looking for. Of course, this is only our experience from our 200 spins test session, and you might have more beginner’s luck than we did.

The constantly moving, fully stacked animated zombie wild seems impressive as it lands on every spin. However, as the novelty wears off, you soon realize that the base game would be pretty much the same without it. Bigger wins come seldom here anyway, and your best hope is to unlock up to 4 extra reels with expanded zombie wilds during the bonus round. This is not so easily done however, as you run out of spins rather quickly here. Anyway, Wild Waker is a clever enough addition to the undead genre, and we are sure zombie fans will appreciate it more than we did.

What are the bonus features?

The base game comes with one feature only, namely the Expanded Walking Wild feature. The walking wild is a fully expanded 1x3 zombie, and it will step in for all regular symbols to help you form winning combinations.

It cannot step in for the bonus symbols however, but the zombie walking wild is always present. It takes over a randomly selected reel for each spin, and if you land more wilds adjacent to it, you will get a payout of either 1.2x or 6x (for 3 or 4 in a row, respectively).

Free spins in Wild Walker

The free spins bonus round is progressive in Wild Walker slot, and this means that you can unlock more benefits.

When you land 3 or 4 of the skull in a gas mask scatter anywhere on the same spin, you will receive 8 free spins. This will start you off at either the first bonus round level, or the second, depending on how many scatters you landed.

You will first see a cutscene where a horde of zombies wander through the apocalyptic landscape, and then you’ll be taken into a lab of some kind with an expanded reel set. There are now 3 extra reels you can unlock, and this gives you 8 reels in total if you unlock them all. The free spins bonus round has 4 levels, and each reel you unlock gives you extra expanded zombie wilds as follows:

  • Level 1 (3 scatters) - gives you 1 fully expanded roaming wild.
  • Level 2 (4 scatters and 6 active reels) - gives you 1 sticky expanded zombie wild on the first reel, and 1 expanded roaming wild.
  • Level 3 (7 active reels) - gives you 2 sticky expanded wilds on reels 1 and 2, and 1 expanded roaming wild.
  • Level 4 (8 active reels) - gives you 3 sticky expanded wilds on reels 1, 2 and 3, and 1 expanded roaming wild.

You will collect scatters during the feature, and you need 3 scatters to unlock a new level. You also get 2 extra free spins whenever you unlock a new level. When all the levels are unlocked you will still get 2 extra spins for every 3 scatters you collect. There is no cap on how many free spins you can get in this feature.

How to play

The Pragmatic Play game interface is indeed very “pragmatic”, as it’s a “one size fits all” kind of deal. The semi-transparent bar can blend into any game without too much intrusion, and in this part of the review we will walk you through everything you should know about how to play Wild Walker slot.

You can start by setting up the game as you wish via the hamburger menu down to the left.

The game settings allows you to turn on the Fast Play options, which will increase the pace of your spins. You can also use Battery Saver mode if you’re playing on the go, without the possibility of charging anytime soon. Further, you can turn on/off the game FX sound and music separately, an option we always think is a good idea for developers to include.

To take a closer look at the paytable, you need to press the “i” icon down to the left. The paytable is dynamic, per usual from Pragmatic, and this means that it updates itself according to your chosen bet level. There are 4 character premium symbols here, and they pay from 20x to 4.8x your stake with the mad scientist being the highest value symbol.

There are also 2 mid-level symbols, namely a test tube and a needle gun, and then you have the regular royal symbols of low value. Keep in mind that these are base game values where 3 to 5 matching symbols from left to right on a payline create winners.

If you open up all 8 reels during the bonus round, you can land payouts up to 400x your stake on a single payline here.

The plus and minus icons allow you to adjust your bet level between 25p and £125 per spin, which is a solid enough bet range for most players. If you don’t feel like spinning the reels manually, you can set up the autoplay feature with between 10 and 100 autospins. That’s it really, you’re now good and ready to take on the undead, and save the world from its plague.

The 200 Spins Wild Walker Experience

The animated background in this game is very convincing, and you really feel that you’re part of a zombie apocalypse as seen in countless movies and TV-series. This reviewer is not really a huge fan of the undead genre, be that in slots or movies, but a well-made game from Pragmatic is always something we look forward to testing either way.

The volatility is high, as it is in many games from Pragmatic, so we decided to play it safe and go with a moderate bet level of $2.5 per spin. You can check out the highlights in the video, and we will also do our best to describe our experience with this game in the paragraphs below.

Our session started out with plenty of dead spins (or should we say “undead spins”), and the swaying zombie on the expanded wild kept staring at us with his white, dead eyes from various positions to no avail. Finally, the long-haired, redneck zombie became somewhat useful, and gave us a few smaller wins.

We were really eager to get the bonus round going soon, as it felt like a small eternity powering through this dystopian base game nightmare. We get that this is a high volatility game Pragmatic, but please throw us a bone once in a while with a little meat on it. Finally, after a longer tease, the third scatter we needed landed on reel 4.

The brian-hungry zombies stumbled across the screen, and we now had 8 free spins to look forward to. The roaming zombie wild kept leaping around on the reels, but we racked up very little in terms of winnings. As the final spin came around, our only hope was for the third scatter we needed to land, and thus unlock reel 6 and get us 2 sorely needed extra spins.

Our prayers were heard, and a doctor zombie was revealed as the new expanded roaming wild, while the good ole’ boy got stuck on reel 1. Our 2 last spins yielded only smaller payouts though, and all in all we won 21.68x our stake from the free spins session. Not exactly a massive haul, but far bigger wins are possible for those who have the stamina and the stomach for it.

Review Summary

Audiovisually, Wild Walker slot is crafted with a video game level presentation, and you really feel like you’ve gone through a movie screen and ended up in the middle of a zombie apocalypse when spinning the reels here. The walking expanded zombie wild you get on every spin seems crazy at first, but you soon realize how ineffective it is. It will hop from reel to reel as you play, but very seldom does it actually contribute to significant wins.

Therefore, the whole base game feature seems a bit meaningless, although it does contribute visually to the zombie movie vibe. The bonus round can bring a lot more action as it were, but you will have to be lucky enough to unlock some extra reels rather early on to really benefit here. The 4,900x potential is good enough for a highly volatile game, and zombie fans will probably enjoy Wild Walker a lot more than those that are lukewarm about the genre, like we are.

Pros

  • 1x3 zombie walking wild on every spin
  • Bonus round with extra levels of wild reels to unlock
  • High volatility and 4,900x max win potential

Cons

  • Zombie theme is not for everyone
  • Beware of customizable RTP ranges

If the walking dead is your thing, we have 105 zombie themed slots in our catalog at the time of writing. Feel free to check them all out via the link. Below, we’ve taken the liberty of hand selecting a few games in the undead genre for you. You can follow the respective links to learn more about each game, and also play the free demo version, if you wish.

Lost Vegas - is one of the best and most popular zombie slots out there, and it’s set in a post-apocalyptic version of Las Vegas. You will benefit from 2 random base game features, as well as the Zombie or Survivor bonus round. You need to choose your game mode up front however, and each feature has its unique benefits.

Zombie Hoard - has a more humorous approach to the theme than the game at hand, something we enjoy a lot more than the zombies that take themselves so “dead serious”. You will benefit from a bonus round with fully stacked wilds that can land on all reels, and all wins are subject to a 2x multiplier boost. You can win up to 2,388x your stake here, which is decent enough for a medium volatile title.

Resident Evil 6 - is based on the first-person shooter CapCom game, and SkyWind Group has done a tremendous job designing this thing for maximum dramatic effect. The game has a split screen, and you will join a gang of Zombie hunters from the popular video game franchise. Wins up to 3,000x your stake is possible, and this is a highly volatile game that might just give you goosebumps one way or the other.
