Hades River of Souls Review
It’s almost a shame that the reels block the view to the backdrop of this game, as it’s a pretty neat depiction of Styx, the river that separates the living from the dead. This river is also found on top of the regular reels, and “souls” in the form of wild symbols will keep showing up there, in addition to a few other special symbols. This way the game reveals up front what can potentially happen if you land one or more cascading wins, and this helps keep the excitement up.
There’s a saying that goes like this: “to reach heaven, you need to have your roots planted firmly in hell”. This is certainly true for Hades River of Souls slot, as you can land “heavenly” wins up to 5,058 times your stake when you descend fearlessly into the dark bowels of the earth, and cross the river of no return. It’s either do or die here, as the volatility is mighty high, but you have to risk something to gain something both in this world and the underworld.
The game plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 win-both-ways paylines. You can place bets between 20p and £50 per spin across all platforms and devices, and playing on your mobile or tablet is a breeze with your Android or iOS unit. You’ll benefit from a progressive win multiplier in the base game, and it’s all about collecting wild souls here. The win multiplier does not reset in the bonus round however, and you will also progress twice as fast there. We miss a quick spin option, but other than that Fantasma Games has made a very solid title with Hades River of Souls.

What symbols are there?
All the lower value symbols are greek pots with animal motives like snakes, lions, bulls and ravens. The most valuable regular symbol is Hades himself, first-born son of Cronus and the god of the underworld. The wild symbol is a golden coin with a W on it, and it’s worth the same as Hades. You’ll also find some other notable gods on the reels, and you need between 3 and 5 matching symbols to win.
Here is the paytable for Hades River of Souls slot:- Wild symbol - Pays 10x for 5 on a payline
- Hades - Pays 10x for 5 on a payline
- Persephone - Pays 8.75x for 5 on a payline
- Cerberus - Pays 7.5x for 5 on a payline
- Helmet - Pays 6.25x for 5 on a payline
- Horn - Pays 5x for 5 on a payline
- Animal motive pots - Pay between 1.5x and 1x for 5 on a payline
What are the bonus features?
There are plenty of features to cover in this game, and we’ll start with the Avalanche feature. You’ll see the river Styx (where souls have to cross to get to the underworld) above the reels, and you’ll land different configurations of wild symbols (and sometimes skull symbols and scatter symbols) on the special reel set the river represents.
Whenever you land a winning combination, the winning symbols are removed and this makes room for new symbols to replace them. The wild symbols on the river reel set above will tumble down when they are on the bottom of the 3 rows this reel set comes with. This makes the Avalanche feature a lot more exciting, as you will often benefit from multiple wilds when you hit some nice consecutive wins.
The wild symbols will not only step in for all regular symbols and help you form winning combos, they will also load up the Wild Souls Multiplier meter you see on the left-hand side. Every 3 wilds that are part of a winning combo will increase the progressive win multiplier by 1 point, and the multiplier starts at 1x. It will reset in the base game when the Avalanche wins are finished, but the multiplier you’ve achieved will first be applied to your total win.
The grinning skull is supposed to represent Charon, the psychopomp (yes, it’s a real word) ferryman that brings souls across the river Styx when people die. You need to land only one of this skull symbol to trigger the Skull of Charon bonus feature, and the feature triggers when there are no more avalanche wins. You’ll then see the skull bolt around the reels, and it removes between 2 and 10 symbols whenever this happens.
This gives you a chance to prolong the avalanche wins, as a new win calculation is triggered if the new symbols that fall down are a match.Free spins in Hades River of SoulsThe main attraction in this game is undoubtedly the Hades Free Spins bonus round. The trident symbol with golden background is what you need to trigger the free spins, and you get 10 spins when you land 3 tridents on the reels on the same spin. You also get 5 extra spins for each trident you land above the minimum of 3, which means plenty of free spins are possible here.
The Wild Souls Multiplier is active also in the bonus round, but it’s beefed up to potentially benefit you a lot more. You will now increase the multiplier by +2 points per 3 wilds you land, and the multiplier will not reset between spins. You will also see a lot more of the Skull of Charon feature here, as it will be triggered on almost every non-winning spin. You can also retrigger the free spins feature, and this is done exactly the same way that you triggered it in the first place.

The 200 Spins Hades River of Souls Experience
We were impressed by the originality and the visual presentation of this game from the get-go, and we were eager as heck to take it for our 200 test spin session. The only thing we didn’t like was the lack of any kind of fast play option. You are forced to watch every win being summarized here, and it would be nice if you could click to skip that part as it becomes a bit annoying after a while.
The high volatility was obvious from the start, as our first 20 spins did not see a single win until we suddenly triggered the bonus round. Things escalated quickly here, as the skull kept helping us out on non-winning spins almost all the time. We landed plenty of wilds, and pretty soon the progressive multiplier was up to 13x. We won a total of 274x our stake, which was not a bad start at all.
We then got back to landing dead spin (and once in a while smaller wins) for a while. This seemed to be a pattern here. You will get dead periods, and suddenly a bigger win of some kind. In the base game we got a few noteworthy wins above 20x our stake. This was due to some lucky cascades where the multiplier is boosted up a little, but never anywhere near what we got in the bonus round.
We liked the fact that you can see wilds, and other special symbols, on top of the reels. It helps build anticipation and excitement, and it gives you a harbinger of what’s coming down the pipeline next. We triggered the bonus round one more time towards the end, but won “only” 46x our stake this time. All in all, a pretty entertaining session, and we came out of it with a decent profit too.
Review Summary
The cartoonish visual style is well-done in Hades River of Souls, and the soundtrack sets the mood perfectly as you descend into the underworld. The progressive multiplier is enough to keep the base game interesting, although the bigger wins will most likely come in the bonus round. The combination of bonus features are nicely balanced and quite entertaining here, and the 5,058x potential is pretty suitable for a high variance game like this.
Pros
- Wild souls progressive multiplier
- Skull of Charon can remove symbols on non-winning spins
- Free spins where the win multiplier does not reset
- High volatility and 5,058.4x max win potential
Cons
- Max bet of £50 might be too low for high rollers

Ancient Greece and their many gods is a theme that developers keep returning to on a regular basis, and if this is your thing you are spoiled for choice. Here we’ll present you with some solid games that you might wanna check out if you liked Hades River of Souls slot, as this is far from our first trip into the underworld.
Hot as Hades - is a low to medium variance Microgaming title that has the same cartoonish and comical approach to the underworld as the game at hand. It comes with impressive 3D animations in the bonus game, and there is also a super mode free spins feature with sticky wilds you can look forward to here. Wins up to 100,000 coins is possible, and we think this is a somewhat underestimated title.
Vikings go to Hell - is perhaps the best game in the Yggdrasil Viking series, or at least the most amusing. With epic 3D animations, this game takes a semi-serious approach to the theme and allows the norse heroes to go up against the devil himself. You do this in the 2 level bonus round, where you can benefit from a 3x multiplier and a max win potential of 3,000x your stake.
Beat the Beast Cerberus Inferno - is a brand new title from the renowned developer, Thunderkick, and it’s the third installment in their ongoing high risk/reward series. You can win up to 6,666x your stake here, which is probably not a coincidence, and the game comes with stacked wilds and an exciting free spins bonus round.
